The EURO – a symbol for a united Europe /

COLUMN LCPG Vol.65

The euro (Sign: €) is the currency used by the Institutions of the European Union and in cash available since 1st January 2002. The euro is the second largest currency in the world after US Dollar.

The smallest value coin is 1 cent. The back of the coin differs according to the European state. We - in Germany - have the traditional oak twig on the back which was as well shown on the German “Pfennig” before 1999. It symbolizes the common German countries and it´s common prerogative of coinage.

The largest paper money the European Monetary Union offers is 500.

On the front it bears the EU Flag, a map of Europe on the reverse, the name "euro" in both Latin and Greek script (EURO / ΕΥΡΩ) and the signature of a president of the European Central bank.

On the back you can find a selection of modern architecture throughout the European Continent. In our case it should show a modern symbolic bridge connecting all the European members.

The euro banknotes are made of pure cotton fiber, which improves their durability as well as giving the banknotes a distinctive feel.
