Thanksgiving in the US /

Topics PolyUS Vol.83

Now that summer is over, we at PolyUS are getting ready for the holidays. In the United States, the holiday of Thanksgiving in the late fall is a good opportunity to see family members and eat a big meal together. The day before Thanksgiving is a very heavy day of traffic, as many people are going home. The Thanksgiving meal traditionally includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and other seasonal foods, but every family has their own traditional dishes. My family always makes eggplant lasagna, for example; but my husband’s family makes green bean casserole. (We visit my husband’s family every year. So I don’t have to eat eggplant lasagna any more~)

The day after Thanksgiving is also the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, also known as Black Friday. Many stores have huge sales and deep discounts that don’t happen any other time and are very limited, so shopping is always very crowded. To accommodate this, some stores open at midnight or very early morning hours, and some stores even begin their sales the night before on Thanksgiving evening. Many people go out to shop on Black Friday, but many people stay home and avoid going out on that day too! Though I don’t like shopping on Black Friday, it does feel nice to go out and see the lights and decorations of the beginning of Christmas season.
