After School Activities in Taiwan /

COLUMN PTW Vol.83

Childcare center, the first impression of Taiwanese after school life, plays an important role under the modern Taiwanese society. Another type of organizations are also popular, which have both childcare and art classes functions.

Parents choose different classes depend on their interest, demand and preference such as dancing, assembly model, outdoor exploring, musical instrument or martial arts. Many PTW members’ children joined different art classes as kinds of after-school activities. I would like to introduce the interesting and popular activities as follows.

Let’s start with Kendo, in this martial art lessons, children can increase cardio, develop physical strength and improve the power of spirit. During the physically and psychologically painful sword-fighting, those little “kendo-ka” learn how to manage fear and stress.
The staff, H. J. Yen-san’s son has learnt Kendo for more than 5 years. He says that good manners and attitude, independence and respect have been taught in the class. And Kendo benefited his son greatly by building his confidence and improving his focus.

In Taiwan, it’s very competitive to run childcare center and art classes. That’s why many kinds of after-school activities are created to offer children’s option. I can’t tell you which activity is popular but I can say it’s certainly all the kids are exciting to join after-school activities!
