Children's "after school activities" in Singapore /

COLUMN PAPS Vol.83

In Singapore primary school, after school activity is called “Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs)”. The intent of CCA is to spark passion and interests, and develop knowledge and skills in both the academic and non-academic curriculum areas.
The CCA were divided into the three areas, namely, (i) Sports & Fitness, (ii) Visual & Performing Arts and (iii) Clubs & Societies. Each school offers five CCAs in Sports & Fitness (Badminton, Rugby, Wushu, Floorball, sport and recreation club, three CCAs in Visual & Performing Arts (International Dance, Malay Dance, Choir, Art and Craft Club) and three CCAs in Clubs & Societies (Scouts, IT Club, Speech and Drama and Service and Interact Club).

Students from Primary 3 onwards are encouraged to participate in a CCA and once in a week after school lesson. Badminton is a popular and fun sport that can be played at any age as a social sport with opportunities to meet new friends. Badminton CCA seeks to develop the students in technical skills, strength, agility, muscle power and sportsmanship. Schools want to instill our skills and knowledge in the students through Badminton CCA. Students will be placed in the Recreational Team or School Team according to their ability.

Apart from bringing together students from different classes and profiles, CCA is a natural platform for students to form their character by learning and practicing the school’s values such as Resilience, Responsibility, Care and Harmony, and developing Socio-Emotional Competencies such as managing one’s feelings and working well with others, all of which are essential to prepare our students for future education and employment.
