The new fiscal year, a time for rethinking the meaning of work /

Headline Vol.69

At Polyplastics, FY2015 begins in April. For two consecutive quarters in FY2015 we achieved record-high profits and this outstanding performance is expected to continue in the current fiscal year. Beginning in April, PPC’s head office in Tokyo has started holding a morning assembly of all company employees. The morning assembly includes short speeches by company directors working in Tokyo, introduction of new employees, and commendation of employees for various achievements. The morning assembly is a valuable opportunity for all company employees to share in-house information face-to-face. Employees who joined the company in April have completed their training and have moved to their respective departments where they are earnestly engaged in the new daily work they have been assigned.

This time we highlight a portion of the message by President Goto given at the welcoming ceremony for new employees held in April. Hopefully this message will inspire all of you to rethink what work means for you.

To all of our new employees・・・
I’d like to share some observations by a certain person on work.
Work is not “doing what you want to do,” work is “doing what needs to be done.”
If you conscientiously and sincerely pursue what needs to be done, your work will become enjoyable and in due course of time the meaning of work for you will change from “doing what needs to be done” to “doing what you want to do.”

What you enjoy and what you want to do will become one and the same.

When you were job hunting, I think all of you gave much thought to the kind of work you wanted to do and worried over what sort of occupation and company would enable you to make this a reality. Surprisingly, I think there are many people who have a hard time discovering what they want to do or the type of occupation that will enable them to do what they want to do.

Your path in life has brought you to Polyplastics. If you are conscientious and sincere in performing your work in the company to the best of your ability—doing what needs to be done—your work will become interesting for you and eventually I’m sure you will find that it is “what you want to do.” It is my fervent hope that you will approach your work in this spirit.

This message is sure to have made a deep impression on the new employees who are wondering how to approach the work they have embarked on. It is also a very valuable message for everyone in the Polyplastics Group, regardless of their work history and type of occupation.

At the Tokyo head office, we have started off the new fiscal year with a variety of new initiatives. It is our hope that every new fiscal year will be an opportunity for all company employees to think back on how they have approached their work and what significance it holds for them.
