In August 1982, Nantong government decided magnolia grandiflora as city tree, and chrysanthemum as city flower. The magnolia grandiflora is tall tree with evergreen beautiful leaves and great flowers. As the city tree, it is a symbol that Nantong is thriving and prosperous. In 1982, there were only about 1,542 magnolia grandiflora trees. From then on, the government organizes voluntary planting activities every year and encourages community to plant magnolia grandiflora trees. In PTM we planted 22 magnolia grandiflora trees in 2004, and now they are growing very well.
Chrysanthemum is one of the top ten traditional famous flowers in China, a symbol of the people's revolutionary character and ambitious spirit. In 1982, there were only about 100 varieties. After that Nantong holds chrysanthemum exhibition every year and promotes new varieties. Until now there are more than 2,000 varieties in Nantong. Nantong people are fond of chrysanthemum, which can be proved by thousands of people visiting the chrysanthemum exhibition every autumn. The city tree and flower make Nantong more beautiful.
