COLUMN PTW Vol.68

Many young Taiwanese have two dreams to complete as to mark their symbolic stage of life. One is to climb up the highest mountain –Yushan. Another one is to travell around Taiwan by bike. The recent custom to celebrate the growth of the young man is cycling around Taiwan.

Cycling has never been a traditional mode of transport in Taiwan, but the number of people choose to explore Taiwan’s streets by bike has increased dramatically in the last ten years. A popular cycling route is a ‘round-island’ tour of Taiwan, which can be done by taking a circular tour around the island’s coast or by riding on the inland Wuling route. The most difficult record to make and celebrate growth is the cycling on the highest roads of Taiwan –Wuling.

In a ‘round-island’ trip by bike as being coming-of-age ceremony, young people are encouraged to appreciate beautiful places they live and further understand people they encounter when going through. In general, cycling around Taiwan takes about 7 to 10 days. Especially during summer vacation, we can see a lot of young students, who take challenge to complete round-island trip. Aftter 10 days of cycling, it’s quite obviouse that these young students change a lot. Ha! they become darker, healthier, firmer as well.

Realize yourself, appreicate what you have, and challenge your best competence. That’s a well-liked way to celebrate another stage of life among young generation now!
