Queen Yuna’s Last Performance /

Topics PKL Vol.64

Have you heard of Korea’s famous figure skater, Yuna Kim? She retired after winning a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Yuna encountered figure skating when she was seven years old. Since then, she has put in years of hard practice and during all those years she must have fallen on the cold ice thousands or even tens of thousands of times. And more than just once or twice she surely must have wanted to give up the endless struggle with herself to keep going. But after countless days of practice Yuna worked a miracle for Korea, which was barren territory for figure skating in the past. Yuna taught Koreans about indomitable will that never gives up no matter what difficulties there may be.

There was controversy and much protest over the figure skating judging at the Sochi Olympics. However, Korean people say that there was a faint smile on Yuna’s face when she said, “I’m not concerned about the color of the medal. I did my best, so I don’t have any regrets.” Yuna Kim handled the judges’ decision with grace, and now there is a movement in Korea by people wanting to express their gratitude to this fine sportswoman. Right after her farewell performance, SNS and community portals in Korea were filled with “Thank you, Yuna” messages. We will never forget the gift of a miracle that she gave to Korea.
