Queen Sirikit in portrait stamp collection /

COLUMN PMT Vol.64

In Thailand there are various designs of stamp and let me present one stamp that impressed me – it’s a stamp of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

First, please let me introduce Her Majesty Queen Sirikit biography for a short. Her previous name was Princess Sirikit Kitiyakara. She was born on August 12, 1932 (Thai National Holliday "Mother Day") in the Royal family of Prince Nakshatra Mangkala Kitiyakara. She was growing up in various countries of Europe because her father worked as an ambassador. When her family moved to Paris, she had a chance to meet His Majesty King Bhumibol Aduyadej there. After that they married before His Majesty King Bhumibol Aduyadej reign the throne.

Shall we back to the story of the stamp that I would like to present. It was issued for the celebration on the occasion of 63rd birthday of the queen, and designed under the theme of "Preeminent Protective of Arts and Crafts" which means "the Great Artist who Preserves Arts" to Her Majesty Queen by selecting her portrait picture of her various dressing in Thai suit style. It means that they tried to tell people that the Queen always loves the beautiful of Thai suit from Thai art. Moreover, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit endeavored to foster the cultural products of Thai, such as Thai silk and Thai handcrafts. It was to promote them to be the popular souvenir of Thailand and reach to world fashion.

I'm very proud of Thai arts and culture.
