: "The Unique Way to Spend One's Time-off " (Vol.2) Expedition at Mount Rokam of Tioman Island |
Tioman Island is an island located 32 km off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Pahang, and is some 39 km long and 12 km wide. It has eight main villages, the largest and most populous being Kampung Tekek in the north. Yet, the densely forested island is still sparsely inhabited, and is surrounded by numerous coral reefs, making it a scuba diving haven. It also has a lot of resort & chalet around the island.
The island is served by ferries from the Malaysian mainland, and a propeller plane service by Berjaya Air from Singapore (Seletar Airport) and Kuala Lumpur (Subang Airport).
The heavy rain welcoming the team at the boat jetty of Kampong Salang that evening set the mode of the recce. They began tracking to Base Camp after lunch the following day and arrived at about 8pm. The next day they started the journey just after breakfast at 7am and reached Mount Kajang's summit at 3pm. As if nature wanted to challenge the team, it was literally a long journey down as the team were absorbed in nature's wilderness and only reach the jetty after wandering 21 hours on foot. It was then decided to change the staff's expedition route from Mount Kajang to Mount Rokam as the participants' safety was the utmost priority.
The actual event was held on February 9th & 10th , 2008 and attracted 32 outdoor enthusiasts. It was a smart decision to change the route as entire group managed conquer Mount Rokam's peak after 4 hours of hiking and reached the base camp after 4 hours too. It was a great adventure, exploring the flora and fauna and team spirit as everyone helped each other ascending and descending. As a treat to a great feat, everyone was rewarded with a delicious venison barbeque that night. |
